Earth Day is being celebrated today nationwide. Bobcat Update's Sierra King tells us how Texas State is calling attention to environmental concerns.
Sustainability is a catch word in the environmental movement. It's the desire to preserve resources for future generations. The Environmental Service Committee at Texas State is committed to the cause:
SB
The E-S-C distributes funds to promote environmental improvement projects. Many people share a common interest in preservation.
SB
Earth Day provides an excellent opportunity to remind faculty and students alike that what natures provides must be sustained and renewed.

Terms and conditions may apply. These words are often seen and readily accepted, usually without actually knowing what they mean. As Stephanie Figueroa tells us in this Bobcat Update, agreeing to such terms can result in a loss of privacy.
From social media platforms to e-mail accounts, whenever internet users sign up for free services they are often prompted to check a box to accept certain terms and conditions. Texas State I-T security advises students to learn what they are agreeing to. I-T recently hosted an informational session to provide assistance:

Personal Picasso is a new business in town that offers a unique way to express your creativity. Bobcat Update's Becca Roberts joins us now. Becca, you spent some time at Picasso recently. Tell us about it.
(LEAD) Thank you _____ This local business specializes in B-Y-O-B paint parties and is quickly gaining popularity. Whether it's date night or girls' night out, you don't need any artistic ability to enjoy Personal Picasso.
Picasso may be starting a new trend in San Marcos. It's for people of all ages. Owner and Texas State Alum, Charli Reno, opened Personal Picasso last November. Reno says although business started off slowly, it soon gained momentum.
SB (Charli Reno)
What attracts many of Personal Picasso's customers is the one-of-a-kind experience. Barbara Espinoza was excited to come in for the first time with a bottle of champagne and see what all the hype is about.
SB (Barbara Espinoza)
Texas State art students are invited to be a part of a week-long art show. The show is free to the public, but if there are any donations they will go to the Fine Arts Student Association. Reno says this has been one of her goals since she opened the studio.

The use of electronic cigarettes is on the rise, and it's one reason that tobacco usage is down. Brittany Green has more in this Bobcat Update.
A national survey recently stated that the use of electronic cigarettes among young people tripled from 2013 to 2014. Meanwhile, the percentage of cigarette smokers declined significantly. The trend has been good for business for Marvelous Smoke, a vape shop in San Marcos.
SB
However, not everybody likes the idea of battery-powered vaporizers.

San Marcos officials say they've seen an increase in the number of children entering state protective custody. CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, is campaigning to better serve the children who need help. Sarah Duran has more on the story.
For 30 years CASA has assisted children throughout central Texas, but the group needs more resources to keep up with the growing demand for its services. In November CASA kicked off a one-point-two-million-dollar capital campaign to build a bigger facility off Hunter Road. Board president Joanne _______ says a new building will enable CASA to bring in more volunteers and keep more children out of state care.
SB:
In 2014, the number of Hays County children in state protective custody was 214. CASA was only able to serve 72 percent or 3 out 4 of those children –which left some without an advocate.
SB:
And all it takes is one extra volunteer to change the life of another.

The Texas legislature is considering proposals that could affect thousands of people who want to pursue a college education. Ruby Villarreal has more in this Bobcat Update.
The Texas Dream Act became law in 2001. The law allows for undocumented citizens, those who are living in Texas, to qualify for in-state tuition. The law faces stiff opposition in Austin. Several lawmakers have vowed to repeal it.
SB
Those who oppose the Dream Act claim it wastes taxpayer money, but those who favor it see it as an investment.

Texas State students who work for minimum wage say their paychecks are being stretched to the limit. Ben Godson has the story in this Bobcat Update.
The San Marcos Outlet Mall is a great place to shop, but, for those who work there, they don't have a lot to spend. They have to keep their shopping at a minimum. They simply can't afford much. ______________ has been working at the Outlet Mall for more than ____ years, and he doesn't have much to show for it.
SB
Low wages apply to more than entry level and seasonal workers. Wages are also low for managers.

Gregory Tate
Texas State students are getting their heads ready for graduation, and their caps. Greg Tate has more in this Bobcat Update.
Texas State has quite a few graduation traditions. Among them include jumping in the river and dunking your ring, but another graduation tradition that's gaining popularity is graduation cap decorating. Designs can range from simple monograms to elaborate works of art. Students are taking to social media to find creative designs and quotes to incorporate into their cap designs. Customized caps give students an opportunity to express their individuality and express their gratitude for those who helped them along the way.
SB
However, not everyone has the ability to craft a cap masterpiece and that's where Stiches & Such comes in. Stitches & Such opened six years ago with only one sewing machine and now they have expanded to include over four state-of-the-art monogram machines, multiple
sewing machines, and a heat press. Owned by a Texas State alum and her mother, the local store specializes in monogram embroidery and they can do any cap design a student thinks of in a matter of about 20 minutes for about 25 dollars.
SB
Student's can even bring in the picture from Pinterest and the Mother-Daughter duo will do their best to match it exactly. They also do customized stoles. So whether students want to decorate a cap by themselves or have it done professionally, they will all look the same when they're thrown in the air come Commencement Day.
Standup: With Texas State Graduation fast approaching, local businesses such as Stitches and Such are cashing in on making Bobcat's graduation a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for Bobcat Update, I'm Gregory Tate.

The City of San Marcos has put out a call for local artists to create a design for a new mural as part of the ongoing Keep San Marcos beautiful project. Aaron Lugo has more in this Bobcat Update
The abandoned commercial building at 110 East Martin Luther King Drive is getting a makeover and the city is commissioning local artists to contribute designs for the chance to have their work displayed in a public space along with a one thousand dollar stipend for every panel of artwork they contribute. Amy Kirwin of the San Marcos Mural Arts committee says that the goal is to discourage graffiti vandalism and to express community values that San Marcos locals share.
SB
In the past, murals have been designed by local artists and Texas State Students. One example is the Mural at the Children's park that tells the city's history from the time of the Native Americans to when Aquarena Springs became a tourist attraction.

Many workplaces frown on their employees having visible tattoos. Bobcat Update's Charlena McNeil reports on how that affects students who may be considering body art:
Tattoos are pretty common on college campuses, but they can be detrimental to one's career plans. Because of this, students should keep their post-graduation ambitions in mind when deciding between getting one that's visible or one that's hidden.

Hays County's population is one of the fastest growing in America. Colton Thompson has more in this Bobcat Update.
The U-S Census Bureau says Hays County had the fifth highest population growth over the past year nationwide, and, in Texas, Hays County is number one. its population has risen by nearly five percent to 185-thousand people. City and county leaders have a challenge on their hands to make sure that the local area can sustain such growth. Streets and highways have to be maintained. Schools and services need to be supported. And there's the question of water -- and whether there's enough to go around. Last summer the city had severe water restrictions because of the lack of rain. But Jon Clack, an assistant director of public services, says the city has enough water for the foreseeable future.
SB
But conservation is very important.

Officials say Hays County is growing in population because Texas State has had an enrollment surge and more jobs are available.

The blaring sounds of train horns that have been bothering San Marcos residents for years will finally be silenced in a few months' time. Colin Woods has more on this Bobcat Update…
Have you ever made it through a sleepless night without hearing the horn of a passing train? For many San Marcos residents, the feat would be rather difficult if they live in an apartment complex near the train tracks. Trains pass by from five to ten times a day blaring their horns and leaving residents nearly deaf for a few seconds at a time. This can be a problem for residents like Austin Springer
(SB)
Wildwood and Copper Beech are apartment complexes close to the tracks. Managers there say the loud train horns have affected their residents:
(SB)
(SB)
The trains -- by law -- are required to sound their horns at all of the city's 19 crossings, but now the city is ready to have quiet zones at night, which means the requirement will be waived. To ensure the safety of motorists, warning signs will be seen at all of the affected crossings. The quiet zones will take effect near the end of May. For Bobcat Update, I'm Colin Woods.

The food truck park in San Marcos offers a wide variety of good eats to chose from. Pizza, pita and much more are on the menu at The Hitch. Becca Roberts has more in this Bobcat Update.
The Hitch has an eclectic feel and a diverse food selection. Texas State students bring a lot of business to the park, but the place stays busy year round -- even when much of the student population declines during breaks. Dillion Behne, of St. Pita's, says weather is the biggest factor when it comes to the rise and fall of activity.
SB (Dillion)
While some local businesses may feel the negative effects of school breaks, The Hitch is apparently not one of them. San Marcos resident Gayle Gaston says she enjoys The Hitch.

It was carnival time in San Marcos last week, and Bobcat Update's Matthew Connor attended. Here's his report:
Farmer Fred's Garden Spring Carnival is a decades-old tradition in San Marcos. Matching it is a similar harvest carnival near Halloween. The city's Parks and Recreation Department organized the spring carnival, which is mostly staffed by volunteers.
SB
Carnival-goers could play games, and a few vendors were there as well, selling things like food and snow cones. Children enjoyed the animals, the train and egg hunts.
SB
Each of these carnivals takes a week to set up and four to six months to plan. For Bobcat Update, I'm Matthew Connor.

Some of the bus drivers at Texas State might go on strike, if they can't reach a deal with the company they work for. David Cornwell has more in this Bobcat Update.
Contracts talks have apparently stalled between shuttle operators and Transdev – the company that runs the university's shuttle system. The bus drivers are represented by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 10-91. The union is petitioning for higher wages.
SB - Alishia
Transdev's contract offer has been turned down by the union voters. The offer included a pay raise of 25 cents after every year worked, stopping at around the 15 dollar an hour mark. However, shuttle operators who have worked six years or more for the system would receive a stipend of 250 dollars a year with NO pay increase.
SB - Union President
Currently, the Bobcat Shuttle operators earn 10 dollars and 98 cents per hour when they're first hired, compared to U-T's shuttle operators receiving 13 dollars and 30 cents an hour After four years, shuttle operators at U-T earn as much as 20 dollars and 38 centers per hour.
SB- Union President
The General Manager of Transdev at Texas State, Jack Besch, says that the significant portion of the workforce is comprised of part-time students. The company believes wages and benefits are in line with the type of service being provided. Union president Jay Wyatt says one-third of the operators are students, one-third are retirees, and one-third are looking to make a career driving the shuttles.
SB - Union President - talking about Strike vote
Transdev and the union will next meet on April 28th. If those talks don't produce results, a mediator may be asked to intervene. And if that step doesn't resolve the situation, a bus driver strike is possible. For Bobcat Update, I'm David Cornwell.

San Marcos has experienced some very dry summers the past few years. Bobcat Update's Austin Guerrero reports on what might happen if the drought continues.
The San Marcos River is home to hundreds of plant and animal species. Some are endangered when water levels go down. Efforts are underway to conserve the river. Ben Taylor works at the Meadows Center at Texas State.
SB
While some regard the Meadows Center as merely a tourist attraction, Taylor and the center's staff see it much more than that. From the glass-bottom boat rides to the exhibits, their job is to send a message -- The river and aquifer are important historically and scientifically.
SBSewell Park and tubing down the river are part of the San Marcos tradition, but it's great every once in a while to remember that preserving the plants and animals that live there is vital. For Bobcat Update, I'm Austin Guerrero.

Some central Texas high school students had an opportunity this week to see what it's like to be a Texas State student. Stephanie Figueroa has the story.
The annual Bobcat-for-a-Day event is for students from area high schools to further pique their interest in attending college. The baby Bobcats are given an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a Texas state mentor to answer their questions.
SB
Students met in the L-B-J Student Center and were paired with mentors according to which major the students said they were interested in pursuing. Baby Bobcats were able to follow their mentors to class and to check out what attending a university is like.
SB
More than 200 students participated in Bobcat-for-a-Day this year, representing six schools. This was the biggest turnout for the event since it began six years ago.

San Marcos is pushing for a way to divert more waste from the area landfills. Bobcat Update's Zach Bland has the story.
One of the San Marcos area landfills will be closing in November, so it's more important than ever that residents recycle their garbage. The city has already been attacking the problem with composting.
SB
Composting is recycling organic materials by letting them decompose naturally. The compost that is produced has many uses.
SB
Programs like dropping off brush and Bobcat Blend provide recycling alternatives. A lot of waste is being gathered -- including paper packing materials and cardboard, but the city is hoping more people get involved.

Chris Simmons
Time management is a crucial skill for a successful college career. Students have to find a way to juggle school, a job, and get rest. Chris Simmons has more in this Bobcat Update.
A full-time student has plenty of work to do on the road to graduation, but it isn't just work in the classroom that stretches students thin. A 2011 U-S census report showed 71 percent of the 20-million undergraduates had jobs, and one out of five worked 35 hours a week or more. The rising cost of tuition makes it necessary for many to have a job.
SB
Others say they hope that working while enrolled in classes will lighten the burden of debt post-graduation.
SB
School and work can be difficult together, but those who manage to find a balance between the two agree on the benefits. Testing their mettle, students who pull it off understand the value of properly managing their time. They can appreciate earning their own money and they know that any job experience looks better than no job experience to potential employers.

Brittany Green
Texas State's Baptist Student Ministry, known for finding unique ways of reaching out to students, hosts a weekly event that does just that. Brittany Green has more in this Bobcat Update.
B-S-M hosts Refuge every Thursday night at 7:30. During the event, students and staff come together to worship with live music performed by the organization's band.
The reason behind the event being called Refuge is simple.
SB
Refuge provides students with an opportunity to engage in fellowship.
SB
After a worship service, everyone breaks into small groups where students and staff discuss scripture and how it relates to their lives.
The staff believes that Refuge is important for the community.
SB
Beverages and snacks are also provided at the event.
Stand-In: Anyone is welcome to come to Refuge. For more information, you can visit B-S-M's Texas State website. For Bobcat Update, I'm Brittany Green.

Students from the Texas State N-Double- A-C-P chapter are trying to establish an African-American studies program on campus. Tyler Stevenson has the story.
Many students are surprised Texas State doesn't have an African-American studies program. N-Double-A-C-P President Stephen Rollins says creating one would benefit all students personally and professionally.
SB
Rollins says the programs goal would be to educate students about black history, beyond slavery and civil rights.

For a limited time wildflowers are blooming in Texas. Sarah Duran has more in this Bobcat Update.
Warm, sunny days and fields of flowers can only mean one thing in the Texas Hill Country -- spring time. One flower in particular gets most of the attention.
SB
You can find a variety of blooms in the San Marcos area, with a wide array of colors.
SB
While they're blooming, bluebonnets serve as a pollination site for bees.
SB
While many will admire the striking asher blue plant along roadways, others might stray away from picking the flower in fear of potentially breaking state laws.
SB

Stand up: According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, there are actually no laws against picking our state flower. However, there are laws against property damage and impeding traffic so you may want to keep that is mind when picking the flowers this spring season. Bike repairs can be expensive, but Texas State provides an alternative that many students may not know. Josue Plaza has more in this Bobcat Update.
As the quad fills with students moving to and from classes, Peter Vogt and David Ross set up their equipment. A line of various types of bicycles and tools surround them. Vogt and Ross come with one goal in mind, letting students and faculty know about The Bike Cave.
SB
Funded by Transportation Services, The Bike Cave assists students by making repairs, often for free, while teaching them proper bicycle maintenance and how they can do it themselves. The main shop, in Room 100 of the Colorado Building, is at a convenient location for many Bobcats.
SB
Workers and volunteers at The Bike Cave are happy to help their fellow students with bicycle repairs. Don't own a bike? No problem. You can purchase one from The Bike Cave's re-cycled stock, a collection of bikes that have been abandoned, but are still guaranteed to get you around campus.

The Springtown Shopping Center in San Marcos is now under new management, which means a renewed effort to lease the site to retailers. Erin Pollack has more in this Bobcat Update.
An Austin-based real estate company is renovating the center to make it more attractive for restaurants, entertainment and more.
The Endeavor Real Estate Group recently purchased the 18-acre site at the intersection of Springtown Way and Thorpe Lane, across from the big H-E-B. The location has been largely dormant since 2009 when Target, Bealls and Penneys moved elsewhere in the city.

Some students have been taking advantage of the warmer weather -- catching some rays and perhaps working toward a summer tan. Tanning can be a serious pursuit whether it's from sunshine or on a tanning bed. Hunter Cortez tells us more in this Bobcat Update.
This time of year you will see more people wearing shorts and tanks around campus exposing more skin to sunlight. Sunless tanning is also an option.
SB- Leah
There are precautions that must be taken when tanning in a bed. Chelsea Sawyer, manager of Great Tans in San Marcos, says to prevent cancer and other harmful effects one should avoid burning.
SB
The F-D-A regulates tanning salons by requiring set timers for all beds and protective goggles for all tanners. At G-Tans, lotions are provided to protect one's skin and warning signs are posted in every room. Those who work at the tanning salons also provide guidance.
SB
One bit of advice for would-be tanners is to do some research. Find out what the best practices are before spending time under the lights. Be cautious to avoid harm. For Bobcat Update, I'm Hunter Cortez.

The Texas State Theater Department will have five students recognized next month at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Leah Hatcher has more in this Bobcat Update.
The Texas State Theater Department each year nominates select undergraduate and graduate students for their outstanding work. Each nominee vies for recognition at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Five students have advanced as finalists this year. The national festival will take place in Washington April 14th through the 18th.
SB
Third-year grad student in dramatic writing, Kevin Talley, comes away with perhaps the biggest achievement. Talley has been awarded the Ken Ludwig Playwriting Scholarship for best body of work -- including his original play Snake Oil.
SB
Talley is joined by Joel Britt and Austin Sanchez for their work in lighting design and stage management for the show Rent, while Jordan Morille advances for his original play Norma's Rent. Shelby Acosta will also be awarded at the festival for her regional musical theater initiative. Texas State been sending finalists to the national festival consistently since 2001. It is hoped that such recognition brings more attention and more students to the department.

A quick stroll to downtown San Marcos is all it takes for Texas State students when it comes to adding to their fashion collection. Charlena McNeil has more on this Bobcat Update.
The clothing stores downtown have new inventory for the spring and summer and offer diverse styles for each season. The stores do much to accommodate student tastes and preferences. For example, Crickets & Lotz of Shoes owner, (name), says she remembers what it's like to be a student.
SB
K-N-Ds offers customization. Here, shoppers are allowed to modify their purchases to match their vision.

At the University of Oklahoma, a fraternity was closed after a video showing racist remarks. At the University of California-Irvine, a policy was briefly in effect that banned the American flag. These actions raise questions about how freedom of speech is being applied on college campuses. Bobcat Update's Brandi Calhoun has more.
Texas State has a safe haven for free speech and diverse perspectives. Students are allowed to gather at the stallions statue on the quad when speakers talk about their opinions and beliefs as long as the assembly is peaceful. Debate is encouraged.
SB
Texas State has had its share of political protests. For example, in the late 1960's, a group dubbed the San Marcos Ten were suspended for peacefully protesting the Vietnam War. [Who speaks in the soundbite] says any action to ban protests or speech must be weighed against rights found in the U-S Constitution.

Beware of scam artists! Students can be a target, but there are ways to avoid being taken. James Smith has more in this Bobcat Update.
Internet scams are designed to cheat people out of their money. Just last month, a scam artist tricked more than 100 students at Texas State into clicking on a phony job solicitation ad on Jobs-4-Cats. Though the post was flagged and removed, some students now feel uneasy about using the site.

Texas State will send three athletes to nationals this weekend to compete in a track meet. Chandler Voswinkel has the story.
1994 was the last time Texas State sent as many as three track athletes to the N-C-Double-A Indoor Championship. Another trio is about to compete in the national spotlight. Aaron George, Darian Brown and Allie Saunders are in Fayetteville, Arkansas, preparing for the event this weekend.
SB
Senior Darian Brown will be representing the men's team in shot-put. A few weeks ago Brown set a career best for himself and broke the previous school record. This will be his second national appearance.
SB
Allie Saunders, who is also a previous nationals participant, will be representing the women's team in the triple jump. Saunders has the university's indoor record for triple jump. The record she broke had stood since 1992. Saunders says she is striving to do her best at the nationals.
SB
This will be sophomore long-jumper Aaron George's first national appearance — but he says being in the spotlight will not affect his performance.

Spring break is coming up, as are those dreaded mid-terms. The Student Association for Campus Activities at Texas State has come up with a way for students to de-stress as they study for their exams. Stephanie Figueroa has more in this Bobcat update.
SACA hosted a new event on Tuesday, called Treat Yo Self. It gave students an opportunity to pamper themselves and make their own ex-foliating scrubs. The event was held in the L-B-J Student Center and was inspired by the hit television show Parks and Recreation.
Event Coordinator Valerie Gonzalez-Vega says she wants to give students something fun to do before spring break and maybe take their minds off mid-terms for awhile.
SB
This is the first year the event has taken place, and, according to SACA volunteers, they might try it again during finals or some other testing time. Many students showed up to take part in the event.
SB
In addition to creating scrubs, students were also given an avocado and a banana to make their own vegan hair mask.
SB
From a coconut lime scrub to a vanilla lip scrub, students were able to make these edible concoctions to take home and relax. For more information on this or other upcoming SACA events, visit the group's Facebook page or its Texas State website -- just search for SACA. For Bobcat Update, I'm Stephanie Figueroa.

Cyber-bullying is a daily occurrence for many Internet users. When constant harassment is taking place, the stresses associated with the bullying take a toll on a person's health. Ruby Villarreal has more in this Bobcat Update.
A 2014 survey about online harassment by the Pew Research Center found 26 percent of 18-to-24 year-old-women say they've been stalked online. Dr. Hilary Lambert, a counselor at Texas State, says cyber-bullying can cause a feeling of uneasiness.
SB
A University of Washington study found college women who reported being cyber-bullied were three times more likely to meet the clinical criteria for depression. And if the cyber-bullying was connected to unwanted sexual advances, the odds of depression doubled. When victims are in this situation, they might feel embarrassed or trapped. Dr. Lambert says having a friend to talk to can help counteract the negative feelings.

You may notice a cleaner, less trashy river today. Bobcat Update's Chris Simmons has more.
This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Great Texas River Clean Up. About 700 volunteers participated in the event Saturday in an effort to preserve the beauty of the San Marcos River and help the local wildlife thrive. Some volunteers were on foot along the banks, while others hopped in canoes to get further down the river.
(SB: MelanieHoward….)
Texas State graduate students with an interest in sustainability were also on hand to study what type of trash has the biggest impact on the river.

The San Marcos River is cleaner today -- thanks to an event this past weekend. Ben Godson tells us about the 30th anniversary of the San Marcos River Cleanup.
It's an early start for volunteers today as they head down to the San Marcos River. They are doing this because they are participating in the annual River Cleanup in San Marcos. The clean-up crews meet at specified locations where they're handed trash bags to pick up the garbage they find. Some are on foot, others in canoes to pick up floating trash in the water.
(SB)
It's the love of the river and the desire to preserve the waters that push everyone to clean up today.

Texas State is using kiosks near the bus loops to help students have a faster commute. In the kiosks are electronic maps. Allie Ibarra has more in this Bobcat Update.
Students with smart phones have been able to use the Texas State App in order to see where their bus is en route, but not all students own a smart phone.
The University's Department of Transportation Services has made it easier for students to get real-time bus info by placing three electronic kiosks at each bus loop on campus. San Marcos' first electronic recycling facility is open for business. Colton Thompson has more in this Bobcat Update.
Electronic waste is taking a lot of space at landfills. To help alleviate some of the waste, a new firm called R-Three Recycling has opened in San Marcos at 2-15 West San Antonio Street. Owner and founder, Marcos Garza, says he saw an opportunity to help San Marcos residents when he realized there wasn't an electronic recycling facility in the area.

Starting May first, Texas motorists need only have one sticker to show that their vehicles have been inspected and registered. The new Two-Step/One-Sticker program goes into effect. Angelica Cobos has more in this Bobcat Update.
Vehicles are no longer issuing inspection stickers because of a law passed in 2013.
Stand up: After passing an inspection, drivers will get an inspection report. They'll then take it to their local tax office to get a registration sticker.
The cost of registration and inspection will not change and the registration sticker will look the same. According to the Two-Step/One-Sticker website, vehicle owners will have to have only one sticker and one date to remember.

News outlets on campus are finding ways to reach out to a generation that's gone digital. Brittany Green has more in this Bobcat Update.
A survey conducted by Elite Daily and the Millennial Research Core shows that most young adults are getting their news online as opposed to broadcast or print. According to the study, 83-point-four percent of young adults said that their primary source of news is either an online-only news site, websites managed by traditional news media organizations, Facebook, Twitter or other social media. Three-point-one percent said they get their news from print. Five-point-seven percent said they get their news in other ways. Some believe using online sources is easier and more practical.
SB
The student newspaper at Texas State, The University Star, has found ways to reach out, so that readers don't have to pick up a paper.
SB
The university's radio station, K-T-S-W, has also discovered the benefits of adding online components.
SB
Those in charge of the campus news organizations recognize that it's important to adapt to what the audience demands, and it looks as though the student media are meeting that challenge head-on. For Bobcat Update, I'm Brittany Green.

Undergraduate students now have a chance to walk away with prizes of up to three-thousand dollars, if they can come up with a great business plan. Charlena McNeil has more on this Bobcat Update.
The McCoy College of Business has announced its 2015 Business Plan Competition, encouraging students to compete for its grand prize. The competition will consist of four rounds where students present their business ideas. Aspiring entrepreneur Adam Nwaozo (Waz-o) says he hopes this competition helps turn his business idea into something real.
SB
Presentations will be judged by a panel of industry professionals along with experienced entrepreneurs. Business major Josh Coleman says he feels the competition gives students a reason to work hard at something they're passionate about.
SB
The competition will have judges submit feedback after each presentation in order to provide students with an educational opportunity. All types of businesses are welcome to join the competition. The deadline to enter is March 6th. For Bobcat Update, I'm Charlena McNeil.

Life as a freshman can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Texas State has resources available to help freshmen overcome their anxieties about what's ahead. Erin Pollack has more in this Bobcat Update.
Texas State offers many services to freshmen including Personalized Academic and Career Exploration, or PACE. Claudia Gasponi, an employee of the Undergraduate Academic Center, says freshmen often don't know where to go for advice.
SB
These services are designed to help freshmen explore their personal interests, academic plans and work life. Michelle Bohn, a senior administration assistant, says there are steps students can take if they're unsure.
SB
The PACE center is located in the Undergraduate Academic Center, and the PACE MAC center is on the second floor of Commons Dining Hall. Freshman Kayla Henneke says she has been to the PACE center for advice.
SB

Chantel Nurkowski
The Texas State campus is kept clean and maintained every day, thanks to the building operations crew. Chantel Nurkowski has more in this Bobcat Update.
With roughly 36-thousand students filling the dining halls and classrooms each day, trash and spills are left behind. But with a cleaning crew in each building, the bathrooms, floors, and furniture are kept spotless. Custodian Maria Gonzales works in Centennial Hall, and says she enjoys her job because of the appreciation that is shown.
SB
The building operations crew gets help from students and faculty, which makes the job a lot easier. Head custodian Susanna Garcia says she's been working at Texas State for 23 years.

Tyler Stevenson
Texas employees, working for minimum wage, earn seven dollars and 20-five cents an hour. And, as Tyler Stevenson tells us in this Bobcat Update, students who earn that amount often struggle to make ends meet.
According to Texas State's financial aid website, the cost of attending the University full-time ranges between 18- and 32-thousand dollars. Many students are overwhelmed trying to budget college expenses on a minimum-wage budget.
SB
To make up for the lack of income, some students take out loans. But the thought of being in debt after graduation scares some students.
SB
Last week when Walmart C-E-O Doug Mc-Mill-en announced the company is raising its minimum salary to nine dollars an hour, it sparked a debate about whether all businesses should raise their minimum wage.
SB- Sociology Professor
However, there can be a downside to it.
SB- Sociology Professor
While Bouzard says she thinks government will eventually raise the minimum wage, she doubts the increase will be enough to cover the majority of student bills. For Bobcat Update, I'm Tyler Stevenson.

Sarah Duran
There are many things to consider when choosing the right dorm room, especially price. In this Bobcat Update, Sarah Duran takes a look at what a few extra dollars can buy.
Texas State offers on-campus residents more than 20 options when it comes to choosing dorms.
SB
Dorms range from community-style living in Laurel Hall to upscale super suites in San Jacinto Hall. Students can find accommodations that fit a wide range of styles. In some halls, students can pay up to four-thousand-dollars in housing rates alone. San Jacinto resident Jessica says her dorm is worth the price, but there are some drawbacks.
SB
The adjoining suites in Tower Hall offer something extra.
SBThere are fewer amenities in the less expensive halls. Dorms like Beretta, Lantana and Laurel attract students with a different selling point.
SB
Whether students go all-out or opt for the less expensive, they'll find benefits in all the dorms. For Bobcat Update, I'm Sarah Duran.

Cody Wilson
Help is available for those who stress out before a test. In this Bobcat Update, Cody Wilson tells us about the Brilliant Bobcats College Success Series.
The words on the page start to blur together. Hours have gone by and it feels like nothing has been accomplished. The test is only hours away and studying any more seems impossible. Bad study habits can set students up for failure, but Brilliant Bobcats can help.
SB
Brilliant Bobcats hold several workshops each semester to assist students in overcoming their academic struggles. One recent workshop was called Breaking Bad -- No, not the TV show -- but breaking bad study habits.
SB
Stand Up
SB
During the workshop, students shared tips on how to study and what has worked for them. Some solutions were pretty obvious.
SB
The workshop helps students realize that small actions can go a long way when studying. Instantly going over notes after class, talking with the professor during office hours and taking small study breaks are simple things that can help students retain information.
SB
The Brilliant Bobcat College Success Series is focused on teaching students various strategies and skills for success. The workshops vary from effective note-taking to money management. The program urges students to use all the resources available to them. For Bobcat Update, I'm Cody Wilson.

Claudia Hernandez
Texas State offers a service to students to help them have a competitive edge. It's called i-CAT. And, as Claudia Hernandez tells us in this Bobcat Update, the service is useful when students apply for jobs or scholarships:
i-CAT -- which stands for Individualized Co-Curricular Activity Transcript -- is used to document student experiences outside the classroom. Such experiences may include athletics, events, community service, scholarships and honors.
(SB)
The i-CAT record can be used to show employers or graduate schools something about students other than their grades.
(SB)
Some believe that the university can do a better job of informing students about this co-curricular transcript.
(SB)
The i-CAT service can be found online. Go to the Texas State website and search for i-Cat. For Bobcat Update, I'm Claudia Hernandez.

Haley Watson
Colds and the flu can spread quickly on a college campus. Those who become ill can be treated at the Student Health Center. Haley Watson has more in this Bobcat Update.
Most students try to take precautions to stay healthy. In each building on campus they can find hand sanitizers and sanitation wipes to help reduce the spread of germs. But if all else fails a trip to the Student Health Center may be necessary, and it's a good idea to have insurance.
SB- Jorge Castaneda heard it through maybe email
Even though the health center is offering this option, many students don't know about it.
SB- Joseph Duong heard some things from a coworker
SB- Karen Gordon-Sosby deadline and how to get it
Some students may still be under their parents' insurance plan since the cutoff age is now 26. Those who need their own policy can find information at the Student Health Center's website. The deadline is Friday. For Bobcat Update, I'm Haley Watson.

Music lovers at Texas State have two new exhibits at the Wittliff Collections to be singing about. Nick Casiano has this Bobcat Update.
The Wittliff Collections at Texas State's Alkek Library have been the home to multiple exhibits throughout the years. From The Faces of Texas to the Lonesome Dove collection, the Wittliff Collections offer a variety of exhibits for students, faculty and anyone interested in history.
SB – Patricia Serina on Wittliff Collections
The Wittliff's newest addition is called Homegrown featuring hand-drawn music posters from Austin's music scene.
SB – Michelle Miller on Homegrown
Keeping with the Homegrown theme is another Wittliff exhibit called Armadillo Rising. It features artifacts from the 1970s including items like Willie Nelson's blue jeans and shoes, the guitar he played at Austin City Limits, and even some spent marijuana joints. The exhibits Homegrown and Armadillo Rising will run until July 3rd. For more information on events hosted by the Wittliff collections, you can visit the Wittliff Collections website. Spring Break is coming up soon, which means the Student Rec Center is more crowded than usual. Many students are trying to get beach ready. In this Bobcat Update, Allie Ibarra tells us about a variety of ways to get in shape.
The Student Recreation Center is a great place for students to get a good workout while preparing for those spring break beach bods. However, students often find the gym overcrowded during the spring semester making a quick workout turn into a big hassle. Fitness and Wellness Assistant Director Raquel McAfee says the department offers something for everyone.
(SB)
The department offers up to 60 group exercise classes a week including new some classes, like Barre Burn, Boot Camp, and Specialty Yoga. But not all students work out with spring break in mind. Senior Jannelle says she comes to the rec to help her reach her New Year's resolution goal.

The key to good journalism is always being accurate. That's according to the C-E-O of the Texas Tribune who shared his insights with Texas State students last night. Hannah Cramer has more in this Bobcat Update.
Evan Smith talked about the risks that he and other investors took five years ago in establishing The Texas Tribune. It was launched as a non-profit organization to cover Texas news, especially politics. Smith told students at a Q-and-A forum last night that getting news stories right doesn't necessarily mean getting them first. He said the Tribune has earned respect for its approach.
SB
Texas State lecturer Dale Blasingame introduced Smith and asked a few opening questions. Students live-tweeted throughout the event and had the opportunity to ask Smith their own questions.
SB
Smith advised students on how they can find jobs in journalism.
SB
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has other speakers lined up for its Digital Media Entrepreneurship Speaker Series. Later this semester Peabody and Emmy award winner Whitney Shefte will speak, followed later by independent filmmaker Bernie Burns. For Bobcat Update, I'm Hannah Cramer.

Asher Woolridge
Racial strife has been in the news this past year. Police and minority populations have clashed in cities like Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City. Texas State, though, has enjoyed relative calm. In this Bobcat Update, Asher Woolridge takes a look at how student diversity has contributed to greater understanding.
Violent confrontations are cause for concern, but students at Texas State are reasonably assured that such incidents won't happen here. Student Joseph Chrieien says communities hold much of the responsibility for how their citizens get along.
SB
Faculty members recognize the importance of having students feel comfortable in their learning environment. Assistant Dean of Students, Ishmael Amaya, says the minority population has grown significantly since he arrived here several years ago.
SB
Students, like Veronica Ramirez, appreciate the diversity at Texas State. She says she likes the abundance of cultures and finds a social atmosphere that she enjoys.
SB
Over the years the minority populations at Texas State have found acceptance. Apparently the university embraces diversity.

Austin Guerrero
Every year thousands of people are killed or injured in accidents caused by drunken driving. In this Bobcat Update, Austin Guerrero tells us about a local businesswoman who is trying to reduce those numbers.
Her name is Olivia Lukomski and her goal is to revitalize a non-profit organization called Bobcat Boost. The organization's mission is to provide San Marcos with free, safe and reliable transportation.
SB
The idea is to have a non-profit organization help people find a safe ride home rather than drive home drunk. But the organization is having trouble finding volunteers and funding. This is where Lukomski's food truck Dine and Dash comes in. She wants to use some of the food truck's profits to help fund Bobcat Boost.
SB
Lukomski says she doesn't see herself in the food truck business forever. Her focus is on the community and helping people find a safe way home. For Bobcat Update, I'm Austin Guerrero.

Spring break is coming up at Texas State and the university is offering some options for those who are unsure of their plans. Ellis English has more on this Bobcat Update.
This year's spring break is from March 16th through the 19th and what better way to spend the week off than by traveling. This year Texas State is hosting four trips for any student who wants to go and explore nature.
SB- Kathleen Crow on the four trips
For those who want to attend, spots are filling up fast and the best way to sign up is by going to the Campus Activities and Student Organizations desk located on the fourth floor of L-B-J. For students who aren't able to leave campus, some dorms will remain open. However, the dining halls won't.
SB- Officer Taylor on those dorms/how dead campus will be.
And, of course, Sewell Park is always a great place to spend time -- whether you want to rent kayaks or work on your tan. For Bobcat Update, I'm Ellis English.

James Smith
Social media websites are useful tools for connecting with friends these days, but there are other ways you may have not considered. Bobcat Update's James Smith tells us how a bus can be a great place to meet.
The Texas State tram system provides a service to more than 30-thousand students, and apparently it's a hot spot for chit-chat among strangers.
(SB)
(SB)
One tram driver has noticed this also and believes students are just more focused on their studies now that the semester is in full swing.

Changes are on the way to help handle the increasing population of San Marcos -- which is, according to the Census Bureau, the fastest growing city in America. Angelica Cobos has more in this Bobcat Update.
The Federal Aviation Administration recently granted the San Marcos Regional Airport five-point-seven (M) million dollars to make some needed improvements.
SB
One part of the project is to widen the airport's entrance and create a left-hand turn lane from the airport onto Highway 21. Another part of the project will be to install a navigational system to alert pilots when their aircraft are too high or too low as they're landing.
SB
The San Marcos Regional Airport is considered a reliever airport for the international airports in Austin and San Antonio. When emergencies occur at either of the larger airports, pilots can divert to San Marcos. Officials say having reliever status is yet another reason the airport needs to be in tip-top shape.
Stand Up: With the population growing, more planes are coming in, which means even more changes are on the way. For Bobcat Update, I'm Angelica Cobos.

Hunter Cortez
Student feedback is being sought on how to improve the university's library. Hunter Cortez has more in this Bobcat Update.
Libqual is a national survey that is sent to campus libraries around the country. It allows students to access a questionnaire that takes about five-to-ten minutes to complete. University Librarian Joan Heath says comments received from the survey are used to make changes -- such as buying new furniture and upgrading computer labs. Many students, though, haven't heard of the survey Libqual. The ones who have say they believe their voices are being heard.
(SB)
Library administrators are offering incentives to complete the survey. However, one student says such enticements -- for example, possibly winning a set of Dr. Dre's headphones -- are NOT enough to convince her the survey is worth her time.
(SB)
Library administrators say students still have two weeks left to participate in the survey. For Bobcat Update, I'm Hunter Cortez.

Josue Plaza
Students who are struggling with writing assignments don't have to struggle alone. Josue Plaza tells us about The Writing Center.
The Writing Center is located on the first floor of the Academic Services Building-North. Students can go there if they need help with their assignments.
SB- Shelby Newsom
SB
It doesn't matter which step of the writing process is causing problems. The Writing Center offers a wide range of services, including help with Power-Point presentations, essays and cover letters. Each tutoring session is individualized to the student. One such program is called the Tutor Corps, which is exclusively for veterans, taught by veterans.
SB - Micah Wright
According to research, students are less successful at the college level when they fail to engage in campus activities and services.
SB
Each semester, The Writing Center helps almost three-thousand students. So if you're looking for a little guidance, the Writing Center is here for you. For Bobcat Update, I'm Josue Plaza.

Matthew Connor
Once a year, Texas State Career Services holds a job fair for students at the School of Criminal Justice. Bobcat Update's Matthew Connor has more.
Employers come to Texas State all the time, but they were looking for something specific last week at the Criminal Justice Job and Internship fair. Recruiters were seeking students who might work in law enforcement or corrections.
SB
The event has been held annually since the mid-eighties. Many employers have been coming for years, finding new applicants to do new jobs.
SB
Over 40 employers attended, including the San Marcos Police Department, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, as well as the retailer Target. For Bobcat Update, I'm Matthew Connor.

Jade Lewis
Texas State students sooner or later have a choice to make -- whether to live on-campus or off. There are benefits either way, depending on a person's preferences. Jade Lewis has more in this Bobcat Update.
More and more students are finding themselves torn between options. Perhaps they'd like to find an apartment off-campus, but they don't want to give up the accommodations they can find in dorms.
SB
Some students prefer privacy, so apartment living is an attractive alternative.
SB
Finances are apparently easier to manage when living off-campus, especially when it comes to school fees.
SB
One thing students can agree on -- whether they live on-campus or off -- is the extreme hassle of parking.
SB
Either choice has its pluses or minuses. Often it comes down to personal preference whether you live in a dorm or an apartment. For Bobcat Update, I'm Jade Lewis.
More and more students are finding themselves torn between options. Perhaps they'd like to find an apartment off-campus, but they don't want to give up the accommodations they can find in dorms.
SB
Some students prefer privacy, so apartment living is an attractive alternative.

The Texas State quidditch team has been practicing hard to prepare for the southwest regional championships this weekend, which the university is hosting for the first time ever. Connor Markey has more on the story…
Quidditch has been a growing sport among university students since 2011. The Harry Potter-inspired game has caught on around the country. At Texas State, participation has increased from 40 to 120 active members.
SB
The Texas State team has been doing a lot to prepare for the tournament including practice three times a week, group workouts and conditioning.
Both the varsity and the J-V Sharknados will be competing with 24 teams from six different states for a spot in the world cup. Varsity is watching out for the University of Texas while the Sharknados are preparing for Sam Houston State University.
SB
The tournament will take place this Friday and Saturday at the Texas State soccer complex from seven A-M to one P-M. For Bobcat Update, I'm Connor Markey.

It's said that a dog's life is a walk in the park, but they pay us back with companionship and sometimes something more. A Texas State organization is sponsoring an event that could make your pet a prize winner. Bobcat Update's Ben Slade has more.
Texas State Epsilon Nu Tau is organizing an Ultimate Pet Contest. Students can enter a picture of their pet for a chance to win 100 dollars.
SB
Epsilon Nu Tau is hoping the event will be a fundraiser for the entrepreneur organization. A five-dollar entry fee will be charged to contestants. Once submissions are in, Epsilon Nu Tau will pick the finalists and students will vote on them in the quad.
SB
The contest is also giving back to the community. Fifty percent of proceeds will be donated to the San Marcos Animal Shelter. Some students are getting their pets ready for the event.
SB
If you think your pet has what it takes to bring home the prize, contact Epsilon Nu Tau for more details. For Bobcat Update, I'm Ben Slade.

The Alkek Library at Texas State will be renovated this year to update its technology. Aaron Anderson has more in this Bobcat Update.
With more than one-million people visiting its library each year, Texas State has decided to add some new features including new technologies and more flexibility for study and research.
SB
New features will include a high‐density repository, collaboration zones, presentation rooms, an interactive theater, visualization walls, 3-D printing, maker space and a cafe. Some students, though, are unaware of the planned changes.
SB

The San Marcos River will receive a lot of attention next month when volunteers gather to participate in the Great Texas River Clean Up. In this Bobcat Update, David Cornwell tells us more about the event -- which is marking its 30th year.
The San Marcos River is known for its vibrant, clear and full of life feel and appearance. However, with some in the community not paying attention to where their trash goes, the river is in need of a major cleanup. The Keep San Marcos Beautiful Coordinator, Amy Kirwin, is seeking volunteers to help with this year's effort.
SB –Amy
The Great Texas River Clean up will be held on March 7th. This is an opportunity for the community to get involved in a conservation effort.
SB -Amy
The goal for this year's clean-up extends beyond the river itself to include creeks and tributaries. Organizers say there is much to do.
SB –Amy
Students and local residents who spend leisure time at the river know all too well the importance of keeping it clean.
SB
SB
Volunteers will be needed at five different sites this year. The effort will not only clear the river of trash, it will also serve to educate people about how to conserve one of the city's valuable resources. For Bobcat Update, I'm David Cornwell.

Registration is now open for one of Texas State University's biggest traditions. Marcos Esparza has more in this Bobcat Update
Bobcat Build is the largest service project at Texas State and the second largest student-run organization in Texas. Every spring semester, Texas State students travel to job sites to do service projects for residents and local businesses in San Marcos and surrounding areas.
SB
Over the past 12 years the event has seen major growth, originally having just a couple hundred students and a few job sites in the city. Last year Bobcat Build had a record four-thousand students at more than 250 job sites as far away as New Braunfels and Driftwood.
SB
Students and organizations can register online using the Bobcat Build website. For Bobcat Update, I'm Marcos Esparza.

Brandi Calhoun
Texas State University offers many specialty programs that provide students with hands-on, in-the-field experience -- qualities that help set the university apart from other schools. Brandi Calhoun has the story.
Students have opportunities at Texas State that can give them a head-start after they graduate. They get to use real equipment and put into practice what they will actually be doing in their prospective fields.
SB
Students are given opportunities to work with companies where they can gain experience in what will be their jobs. Often there are alums present who can provide a guiding hand.
SB
Even the teachers take pride in the fact that their programs stand out.
SB
Texas State works closely with many professional and student organizations. The University Star and radio station K-T-S-W offer on-campus experience for those who want to work on their skills.
For more information about career choices and how to prepare for them, contact visit Career Services. For Bobcat Update, I'm Brandi Calhoun.

Brittany Green
San Marcos has been named one of the ten most relaxed small cities in America. Bobcat Update's Brittany Green has more on the story.
Movoto Real Estate takes into consideration many categories when evaluating the most relaxing cities including commute time, cost of living, population density and even the number of massage businesses per capita. Texas has three cities on the list: Cedar Park, Georgetown and San Marcos.
According to Movoto, the shorter work week and lower cost of living have made San Marcos one relaxing place to be.
Some residents say there's much more to it than that.
SB
Beautiful scenery isn't the only thing that helps residents unwind.
SB
Not all San Marcos residents feel like the city puts them at ease.
SB
Movoto ranked San Marcos number ten out of 140 small cities across America. Not bad at all.

Chick-Fil-A and Blimpie's have a policy that upsets many Texas State students who want to eat at the restaurant chains' on-campus locations. The restaurants do not accept meal trades until after one p-m. Ellis English has more in this Bobcat Update.
Texas State has a sizable student population, which means there are high demands placed on the variety of eateries on campus. Lately, though, Jones Dining Hall has been closed for renovations, and two popular eateries at the L-B-J Student Center have restricted when meal trades can be used. Students cannot use meal trades at Chick-Fil-A or Blimpie's before one p-m., and that means students have to use other dining services.
SB
Although Chick-Fil-A and Blimpie's aren't accepting meal trades before one, they're still attracting a lot of customers.
SB
The two franchises are located on the first floor of the L-B-J Lair. For Bobcat Update, I'm Ellis English.

This is Black History Month, and, in this Bobcat Update, Courtney Pitkin tells us how Texas State is observing the annual tradition.
During February, America celebrates African-American history, literature, art and food. Texas State
has several events planned including exhibits and student organization gatherings. For example, this week the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion had an event in the L-B-J ballroom

There has been a lot of construction going on around the Texas State campus this semester, but one project in particular has many students worried about how it will affect them. Angelica Cobos has the story.
Jones Dining Hall is closed for renovations until sometime next year, and it's affecting many students.
The dining hall was built during the 1970s and was the most popular dining facility on campus, serving thousands every year.
Having one less dining facility means longer lines at the ones still open for business, but the longer lines mean a lot of waiting, frustrating students like Asher Woolridge:
Sound bite (:12)
Some students fear that the longer lines will cause them to be late to class. At the very least, they are forced to change their daily routines.
Sound bite (:15)
The renovation of Jones Dining Hall will continue until August of 2016, so the long lines that students are complaining about aren't going anywhere, anytime soon. For Bobcat Update, I'm Angelica Cobos.

As a potentially historic snowstorm hits the Northeast, here in San Marcos it's 70 degrees and absolutely beautiful. Bobcat Update's Hunter Cortez tells us how Texas State students are embracing the warm weather.
At Sewell Park, no one is worried about being snowed in. There's no chance of it happening here this week.
SB
Several states in the Northeast, including New York and New Jersey, have declared a state of emergency because of the storm, and government officials are encouraging people to stay indoors.
SB
Texas State students are getting a little taste of summer by spending their afternoon by the river and walking around campus in short sleeves and even shorts. Meanwhile, those who live in the Northeast are getting ready for a long night. But don't get used to this kind of weather in Central Texas. We're expecting cooler temperatures and rain later this week. For Bobcat Update, I'm Hunter Cortez.

Hungry on campus? Well, now there's one less dining hall for students to go to. Bobcat Update's Nic Casiano has the story on how students are reacting.
Jones Food Court, located between Alkek and Tower Hall, is expected to be closed until Fall 2016. The dining hall had a wide selection of food choices from pizza to sandwiches and even Panda Express. With over 35-thousand students enrolled at Texas State, many see a need for a wider selection of dining facilities on campus.
SB
Jones will be completely remodeled to accommodate the need for more choices. But, for now, students have to deal with long lines at other places.
SB
The Commons Dining Hall and the L-B-J dining hall are now packed with students, causing long lines and long wait times. For Bobcat Update, I'm Nic Casiano.

Zach Bland
Bobcats face many of the same problems this semester as they have in the past. Zach Bland has more on this Bobcat Update.
Parking on campus is as much a hassle as it ever was.
SB
The permit-parking only signs are there as usual, but some students may be in for a shock.
SB
Commuters have the option of purchasing a parking permit, but there's no assurance they'll find a spot close to campus.
SB
The staff at parking services has no control over whether more garages or more spaces can be provided, but they hear many of the complaints.
SB
With most of the construction on campus being geared toward dorms and educational facilities, it doesn't look like the parking situation will improve anytime this year. For Bobcat Update, I'm Zach Bland.

Leah Hatcher
At the beginning of each semester, many students cope with an array of stresses and problems. One such problem is getting to school on time. Leah Hatcher has the story in this Bobcat Update.
The Texas State shuttle system can be a convenient and reliable means of transportation for getting to and from school. However, with the university's ever-growing population, setbacks are common and many students have problems making it to class on time.
SB – Patricia Martinez, Student – "I'll sometimes have to wait for a few buses to come by just to be able to get on one."
The Texas State shuttles are equipped with G-P-S tracking so that students can see exactly where the buses are if they use the Texas State app. Texas State bus driver Jordan Richardson says that there are certain high traffic times during the day that make it hard to get on a bus.
SB – Jordan Richardson, Bus Driver – "Leave an hour earlier than your class. Even if it took you twenty minutes yesterday, that doesn't mean that it'll be like that every day."
Those who live away from campus also have the option of driving. An issue for commuters, of course, is the expense of purchasing a parking permit or paying to park park in one of the garages. To avoid such costs, some find walking or biking is the best way to the university -- IF they can get an early start. For Bobcat Update, I'm Leah Hatcher.

Allison Johnson
Texas State University's radio station is undergoing office renovations to accommodate its growing news department. Allison Johnson has more on this Bobcat Update.
K-T-S-W recently re-arranged its work space to create individual recording suites. Also, the newsroom and main office have traded places. The changes will improve efficiency for the staff. The news department will use the new suites to conduct phone interviews and record stories for daily newscasts. The new work space will mean less frequent interruptions and less noise for the news reporters.
SB
There are currently three operable suites, with another two under construction. The individual bays include computers, sound boards, microphones, and sound proofing along the walls, as well as a heavy-duty sound proof curtain to prevent any background noise while students are recording.
SB
The remaining recording suites are in their final phases of construction. For Bobcat Update, I'm Allison Johnson.

Applications for graduation are now open for students graduating in May. Hannah Cramer has more in this Bobcat Update.
Texas State students can now apply for the spring 2015 commencement ceremony. The application is on Cats Web and can be accessed from any computer. SB (Chantal): Discussing her experience applying for graduation.
Students can participate in the spring commencement ceremony as long as they have completed all of their degree's required credits. There is an exception for students who have no more than nine credit hours left to complete.
SB (Chandler): Expressing her excitement about graduation.
SB (Rebecca): Talking about graduation.Applications are due March 13th. The spring commencement ceremonies will be held in Strahan Coliseum on May 14th, 15th and 16th. For Bobcat Update, I'm Hannah Cramer.

Greg Tate
A popular dining hall on campus is closed for renovations and new businesses are taking note. Greg Tate has more in this Bobcat Update.
Jones Dining Hall has served hungry Bobcats since the 1970's. The popular eating facility is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation to better serve Texas State's growing population. The venture has a projected completion date of August 2016. Many Bobcats say they are missing interesting dining options such as Panda Express.
SB
Fortunately, off-campus dining alternatives will soon become just steps away. Just down the hill from campus, budding businesses are setting up shop to serve hungry Bobcats. With a close proximity to the over 36-thousand students on campus, the square is quickly becoming a hot spot for popular chains. Austin favorite, Torchy's Taco's is gearing up for an appetizing February opening alongside Jersey Mike's and Smoothie King. Small businesses are also cashing in on the allure of San Marcos. Pierogies, poutine, and hula hooping are all on the menu at Dine and Dash, a food truck that has been parked in San Marcos since last November. Its owner, a Texas State M-B-A student, hopes to encourage Texas State students to eat good food and make good decisions.
SB
With the opening of all of these new restaurants, Bobcat's have something besides knowledge to be hungry for. For Bobcat Update, I'm Greg Tate.

The spring semester at Texas State University is underway. Most students have the same goals in mind: pass the courses they're taking and prepare for graduation. Brandi Calhoun has the story.
Winter break is over, and the campus is again bustling. It's time again to concentrate on going to school and planning for the future. Texas State student Cody Wilson has a full load this semester. In addition to attending classes, he has an internship and a full-time job.
SB
Students returned to campus with mixed feelings. Having a Christmas break was great, but now it's time to get the ball rolling.

There's a lot of construction activity in San Marcos, which may contribute to some Texas State students being impatient at times as they try to navigate around barriers. Jason Kowalski has more in this Bobcat Update.
It seems like no matter where you go on campus, you always find yourself in the middle of a construction zone. Students have to take detours to get from class to class, and those driving around campus are forced to find alternate routes.
SB
Even businesses in downtown San Marcos are feeling the effects of construction. For example, the building that was once Cedar's Mediterranean Cafe was recently leveled and that area is now just an empty lot surrounded by fences. The construction is troublesome to some San Martians.
SB
Signs posted near some construction sites show that projected deadlines have been missed. When the projects will be finished remains to be seen. For Bobcat Update, I'm Jason Kowalski.
