They call themselves the Hardest Working Band in Texas Hill Country. The Shady Rest Band is keeping busy these days. Bobcat Update's Tyler Dumas has the story.
SB
It's a sunny Sunday afternoon in San Marcos…and The Shady Rest Band is playing its seventh show in as many days. Having such a hectic schedule is normal for the Texas band.
SB
By virtue of its rigorous performing schedule, hilarious social media presence, and good old-fashioned quality song-writing and picking... the Shady Rest Band is one of the best known and most beloved in Central Texas. The band is based now in San Marcos, but its roots lie about one-thousand miles to the west.
SB
Core members Nate Guthrie and C-K Dangerbird share singing and songwriting duties in the band…which has seen multiple line-up changes since it was formed. The Shady Rest often features a rotating cast of guest musicians who dig the band's loose and friendly approach.
SB
The band members are well-known for their between-songs comedic banter, but they also have a solid reputation for musicianship with elements of folk, bluegrass and Americana. They offer a rootsy soup of music that is uniquely Shady.
SB
Not long after arriving in San Marcos…the band picked up a weekly gig at the famous Cheatham Street Warehouse. Cheatham Street is where George Strait, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Todd Snider all performed early in their careers. The Shady Rest Band had only limited success in
California's Sierra Mountains, but the reception has been quite different in Central Texas. The group has built a significant fan base…and its music keeps pouring out.
SB
Since 2012 the band has released three studio albums…as well as a solo project from Nate Guthrie. In 2016 they released Shady Never Sleeps: Live Rest…a live album recorded at the now bulldozed…but once iconic San Marcos music venue…The Triple Crown.
SB
When the band is not on the road…you can often catch them performing in San Marcos.
SB
San Marcos has been good to the band…and they do their best to return the favor. The Shady Rest has been known to perform at house or block parties…or even the Farmers Market. They also support local causes by hosting events in the city.
SB
And San Marcos certainly seems to love them.
SB
SB
SB
The Shady Rest boys don't plan to slow down anytime soon. The group has well over 200 hundred shows slated for 2017, and possibly a new album in the works. So, go check out a Shady Rest show and support local…live music. It's one of the things that makes our town truly special. And San Marcos…always remember…..Keep Shady. For Bobcat Update…I'm Tyler Dumas.

College campuses across the United States are rich in history and tradition. Texas State is no different. Bobcat Update's Jason Harris takes a look.
Traditions at Texas State come in a wide variety and can vary greatly depending on which Bobcat you talk to. One alumni may tell you that it's tradition to take steps two-at-a-time while on campus. A current student might tell you waiting for parking has become tradition. Both would tell you this(train/traffic shot) has become a San Marcos tradition and neither would be happy about it.
SB
In its 15th year, Bobcat Build has become one of the most recognized and beneficial traditions in Texas State history.
SB
Texas State's website lists 27 items on its traditions and landmarks' page; however, most students probably could name only two or three. With enrollment records being set every year, many students feel it's important to honor the university's traditions.
SB
SB
Every year graduating Bobcats dunk their rings and take the plunge into the river -- cap, gown and all.
SB
It will be up to students and the university alike to keep these traditions alive as new generations of Bobcats arrive on campus. For Bobcat Update, I'm Jason Harris.

Areli Cabildo
People from all over the United States came to San Marcos to attend the Texas Cobra Club meet this past weekend. Bobcat Update's Areli Cabildo has the story.
The Texas Cobra Club meets once a year to give people a chance to show off their Shelby cobras. The Shelby Cobra gained recognition for its sporty style and speed.
Cobra Club Director Ken Walker says the meet is similar to a high school reunion.
SB
This year the Texas Cobra Club hosted more than 150 cars. Visitors were treated to food and entertainment for four days. The event helped raise money for a good cause
SB
All proceeds and donations go toward helping people with cystic fibrosis. Participants raise between two thousand and four thousand dollars each year.

Ke'Anna Bullard
During her recent visit to Texas State, world-renowned activist Angela Davis questioned relationships, environmental justice and praised communism. Ke'Anna Bullard tells us more in this Bobcat Update.
America is stolen land. That's how Dr. Angela Davis began her speech Friday at Texas State.
SB
Dr. Davis, a former member of the Communist Party U-S-A, is known for her political and social activism that led her to appearing on the F-B-I's Most Wanted Fugitives list in the 1970's. Many students admire her outspoken activism, especially in today's political climate.
SB
During her speech, Davis urged attendees not to normalize the Trump Administration, a thought that many students apparently agree with.
SB
Davis also talked about how the American prison system is failing and how capitalism dominates the nation's socioeconomic climate. She said racism is rampant but ordinary people can change the world.
SB
If you're interested in learning more about the life and works of Dr. Angela Davis, you can check out her latest book, The Meaning of Freedom. For Bobcat Update, I'm Ke'Anna Bullard.

The Triathlon Club's annual fundraiser, though almost a washout, holds a special place in the heart of one Texas State alum. Bobcat Update's Andrea Cordova has more on the story.
Severe weather warnings forced a change of plans for the triathlon this past weekend, but it was a success in attracting competitors. Planners mapped out a perfect scenic route of the hills and trails in the San Marcos area, and Spring Lake, closed off to the public except for two races, was an ideal setting for swimmers. The event attracted veterans and first-timers alike.
SB
Participating in a triathlon takes hard work and dedication, and, for one particular racer, it required so much more.
SB
Nicknamed Chey-tanium because of the metal in her bones, nothing could stop her.
SB
Though the storm stopped most participants from running across the finish line, results were still posted. And, despite her accident, Chey-tanium finished first in her age-group and second in women's overall.
Rain or shine, those who trained for the race were in it to finish. The Texas State Sprint Triathlon is an annual event. For more information, you can check out the organization's Facebook page. For Bobcat Update, I'm Andrea Cordova.

Dance is an art form that can bring people together. Bobcat Update's Jennifer Galvan tells us in this report how the performing arts at Texas State promote diversity.
The university recently hosted an event showcasing dance:
SB
Dance is appreciated across cultures. It provides opportunities for campus organizations to show off their talent.
SB
Grupo Folklorico Octochtli, a traditional Mexican dance group, performed at the event with the hope of making more people aware of Mexico's diversity within.

Jonathan Szedeli
The Texas House and Senate are discussing a new bill that could affect how taxes are appropriated to public education. Jonathan Szedeli (Zitley) has more in this Bobcat Update.
Texas Senate Bill 3, more commonly referred to as the voucher or school choice bill, is making its way through the House where there has been much debate. Opponents claim that the bill will further take away public tax dollars from an already underfunded public school system. Numerous organizations, such as the Texas State Teachers Association, have denounced the bill.
SB
Many proponents of the bill believe their tax dollars should follow their children. They want to be allowed to choose where the money is spent. Under the bill's provisions, students would have access to an educational savings account that could cover 75 percent of the state's operating costs. This appeals to those who prefer a private, religious or home school education.
SB
Hundreds of students, teachers, parents and politicians converged on the state capital this past weekend to voice their opinions on the matter.
SB
The Senate Committee on Education voted to send the bill to the full Texas Senate after hearing 14 hours of testimony. Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick back the measure and are expected to send it to the Senate floor for a full vote as early as this week.

Upward and out is the goal behind Texas State's Upward Bound program, which is designed to catapult high school students to college. Sarah Jenkins tells us more, in this Bobcat Update.
(standup) Upward Bound dates back to President Johnson's 1964 War on Poverty, and director of the program Ray Cordero says many of the students picked are economically disadvantaged or first-generation-to-college students.
SB: Ray Cordero
The federally funded program begins with high school freshmen and lasts ten years, following them through their undergraduate degree, and includes a six-week summer program at Texas State, where the participants live on campus and attend classes. Jayci Hess
Many seniors are camera ready and posing for their graduation pictures. However, adding glitz to the photos can cause harm. Bobcat Update's Jayci Hess explains.
Many seniors like to use confetti in their snapshots, but the practice can be hazardous to fish and other aquatic animals. Once the glitter is thrown, much of it goes down the drain and into the San Marcos River.
sb
There is a non-toxic, biodegradable alternative that seniors could use instead of plastics.
sb
The group makes the confetti out of rice and color it organically with beet juice and turmeric to show the Texas State maroon and gold. The confetti is occasionally sold on the quad, or you can contact the HEAT organization to buy some.

It's known for style -- an annual gala at Texas State where formal attire is expected. Bobcat Update's Jasmine Clark has more.
SACA recently hosted a gala for students to pull out their best attire and party like celebrities. SACA Member Malik Mingo says the purpose of the met gala is to give students a unique, more upscale event to enjoy.
SB: Malik Mingo (what is the gala)
SB: Ama Laura (loves dressing up)
The affair was also a way for Bobcats to de-stress and get back into the swing of school after transitioning from spring break.

Kathryn Macchia
There's a place in San Marcos where local hip-hop and rap artists are showcased. As Bobcat Update's Kathryn Macchia tells us, the artists have a chance to perform in front of an audience.
Wake the Dead Coffeehouse is usually a quiet place to study while sipping brew and eating pastries, but once a month it becomes a music venue:

Jacey Yarbrough
Two San Marcos historic districts could be expanding in coming months. Bobcat Update's Jacey Yarbrough has more.
The Historic Preservation Commission wants the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council to expand the Hopkins and Lindsey-Rodgers historic districts. The expansions would include residential neighborhoods just south of the downtown square. San Marcos City Planner Allison Brake says it's all part of an effort to preserve the city's unique history.
(((SB)))
One particular structure in the expansion zone, originally built in 1886, is the vacant Lamar School located off Blanco and Hutchison Street. With deteriorating walls, no-trespass signs, and empty hallways that haven't had students in years, the building is in dire straits.
(((SB)))
Some residents are hoping they can preserve as many historic structures as possible. San Marcos home owner, Clarke Hammond, who serves on the preservation commission, says having these districts allows the city to honor its cultural heritage.
(((SB)))
What determines which structures are historical has changed.

Texas State students are giving back to the community. Bobcat Update's Cristian Perez tells us about this weekend's big event.

Bobcat Build is a one-day affair involving several thousand people who volunteer their services to work on projects in the San Marcos area -- all in the hopes of improving the community. Volunteers work on such things as landscaping, picking up trash and even painting houses. Outreach Co-Chair Marissa Trevino says it's a great way to give back.
(SB Trevino- Exciting)
When Bobcat Build started in 2002, it had approximately 700 volunteers at 50 job sites. Since then, the numbers have skyrocketed. Last year about 45-hundred people volunteered to work at more than 300 job sites. Organizers say they're hoping this year's Bobcat Build will be even bigger.

Jason Harris
As the population of San Marcos continues to grow, so does the number of our four-legged, furry friends. The places in the city where Fido can run and play are limited, which makes the San Marcos dog park a popular place for master and pet. But, in this Bobcat Update, Jason Harris tells us the dog park needs some work.
It's spring time -- time to take our pets outside and enjoy the warm, Texas rays. The San Marcos dog park offers a wide-open space for our best friends to run in the sun and hang out with its friends. The dog park is ideal for city dwellers who rent apartments. It provides a fenced-in area for dogs to stretch their legs and really run.
SB
The park provides two separate areas for dogs of different sizes as well as two covered areas with seating for parents to sit and watch their adopted children play. Water fountains are also available for Scooby to grab a cool drink on a hot day. Almost always busy, the park has developed into a small community of dog lovers. However a few months back, patrons voiced their concerns over a few problems they thought were plaguing the park. The first was drainage. Water and mud would linger for weeks after a storm passed through the area. The second was the old water fountain, which rarely worked and was covered in grime and dirt from years of use.
SB
The city responded by shutting down the park, removing the old water fountain and installing a drainage ditch. Patrons of the park were appreciative of the changes but feel more work needs to be done.
SB
A canopy providing shade to humans and dogs alike was also removed leaving only one side of the park with a covered area to escape the sun. A new water fountain was installed but it's the only one in working condition, and it's located on the opposite side of the park from the covered area. Residents know that keeping the park in tip-top shape is a two-way street but also feel the city left a few problems unsolved.
SB
Despite the issues still facing the dog park, residents of San Marcos still flock to it for a chance to let their dogs run wild and socialize with friends. For Bobcat Update, I'm Jason Harris.

Brittany Hill
Many San Marcos drivers are relieved that back-in parking will soon end downtown. In this Bobcat Update, Brittany Hill tells us why back-in parking is being discontinued.
The main reason is that motorists didn't like backing into parking spaces. It's not common and sometimes awkward. Transportation planners implemented the system as a safety measure for bicyclists downtown. However, the parking method caused several problems on North L-B-J.
SB
Some drivers say they avoided parking on streets where backing-in was required.
SB
A lot of residents are excited about the change.

Adam Carreno
A few Texas State students are setting an example of how to achieve one's goals. Bobcat Update's Adam Carreno has more.
What started as a dream has quickly become reality for the owners of Bad Habits Hookah Lounge. After opening its doors just over a year ago, Bad Habits has gone from being a start-up business to the top hookah lounge in San Marcos. Co-founder Taylor Henry says that catering to students, as well the San Marcos community, has been a key to making the business successful.
(SB Taylor- localizing)
The business owners say their guests are offered variety at the hookah lounge.
(SB Ryan - Quality hookahs)
(SB Taylor- Open Mic)
(SB Ryan- Oxygen bar)
Henry says although the business may have sidetracked them from their studies at Texas State, both he and Castillo are committed to finishing their degrees.
(SB Taylor The degree will come)
The owners say they participated in Texas State's three-day start-up program for entrepreneurs. And now that they're up and running their own business, they've been given an opportunity to give back as guest speakers themselves.

Morgan Burrell
The Meadows Center at Texas State is offering guided tours again. Morgan Burrell (buh-RELL) tells us more in this Bobcat Update.
The Wetlands Boardwalk is a floating walkway along the fertile soil of Spring Lake Park. Those who visit this time of year can expect to see birds, lizards and spawning fish. Tours have been offered since 2014. However, in 2015, the boardwalk floated down the river after heavy rain and flooding. The newly-built dock has support beams that are 25 feet higher than the original.

Bill Manson
The City of San Marcos is adapting to Texas State's growing enrollment. More roads, restaurants and apartment complexes are being built. And there's more noise. Bobcat Update's Bill Manson has the story.
Thomas Schaar, a senior at Texas State studying finance, received a citation recently for violating the city's noise ordinance. Schaar says he had no idea there was such an ordinance, and after doing some research he believes he shouldn't have been fined.
SB
Some people support the noise ordinances.
SB
San Marcos Public Information Officer Kristy Wyatt:
SB
Schaar apparently has some options to consider. He could pay the fine and take a defensive driving course. He could request a hearing before a judge. He could request a trial by judge or jury. OR he plead no contest.

Callie Burnett
An internet start-up is helping art students showcase their work in a new way. Bobcat Update's Callie Burnett has the story.
For many art students, it can be difficult breaking into the competitive art industry, but a new website could help make the process a little bit easier.
Art Start Art is an idea founder Erik Culver came up with after he graduated from art school and realized he had created a huge amount of work that was just collecting dust under his bed.
SB
Students can submit their art on the website. A curator then chooses the cream of the crop and provides the artist with ideas for marketing and pricing.
SB
The first batch of artwork will be showcased on the website April 10th. For information on how to buy or sell art work, you can visit Art-Start-Art-dot-com. For Bobcat Update, I'm Callie Burnett.

Tyler Dumas
San Marcos may soon have the sad distinction of being one of the few college towns in America that doesn't have a record store. Bobcat Update's Tyler Dumas has more on the story.
SB
For a lot of folks these days…music simply isn't packaged this way. With the rise of streaming services, most music purchases are in the digital format…or it's not purchased at all. But for those who want to hold something in their hands or just like their music at 33 & 1/3 R-P-M's, an independent record store may seem a magical place.
SB
With digital streaming dominating the market, local, independent record stores are finding it harder to keep their doors open. Superfly's Lonestar Music Emporium in San Marcos is facing that very problem. Superfly's roots are down the road in Gruene, Texas, but it has called San Marcos home since 2012.
The move took place to University Drive in San Marcos occurred after Sundance Records closed shop after more than 30 years in the city. Superfly's is part of a larger organization called Lonestar Music. Its primary focus is on roots-based music or what is now termed Americana. But the store carries a wide array of music. Owner Zach Jennings bought the company in 2009.
SB
Though he acknowledges that people aren't buying music like they used to, he finds it odd that a college town with so many ties to music can't seem to support a record store.
SB
He says the store's location on University Drive, and towing practices in the area have influenced Superfly's business.
SB
In a letter posted to Facebook in mid-February, Jennings broke the news of the possible closure…and at the time it seemed like a very real possibility. He's now more optimistic because he believes changing locations will provide a solution, though nothing is certain.
SB
SB
Superfly's lease is up in April. And then…well…we'll see if San Marcos still has a record store. So go check them out while they are still here. If you buy an album and listen to it from start to finish, it might just change the way you think about music. For Bobcat Update, I'm Tyler Dumas.

Cordova, Andrea
The Great Annual Texas River Clean Up attracts a gathering each year to help restore the beauty of one the region's great treasures -- the San Marcos River. Bobcat Update's Andrea Cordova has more on this past weekend's event:
Thanks to The Annual San Marcos River Clean Up, tubers will be able to float the river litter free. Over the weekend hundreds of volunteers gathered to pick up trash in and near the river.
SB
For the past 32 years, the community has cleaned the entire 90 miles of the San Marcos River. Volunteers pick up litter as they walk the banks, SCUBA-dive the floor and canoe downstream. It's all about making a difference.
SB
Last year's destructive floods had an impact on the clean up.

You may notice graffiti at several locations in San Marcos. Some of it may be the act of vandals, but in other instances what you see may be approved art. Bobcat Update's Jason Harris has more.
Graffiti. A word that sometimes invokes a negative image and with good reason. Sporadic cases of graffiti vandalism pop up around San Marcos, and they happen more often than residents would like. Local business owners say it's not a major issue but the expense of getting rid of it falls on them, not city government. To combat the problem, they are using an unlikely weapon: More Graffiti.
Over half-a-dozen graffiti murals now decorate the walls of shops in downtown San Marcos. Ranging from Marvin the Martian to a Goonies memorial, these spray-paint graphics cover the entire side of some buildings. Most were commissioned pieces, but a few seemingly sprang up overnight.
Other proprietors are using graffiti to promote their businesses. For example, Danny's Barber Shop proudly displays its logo with a full list of services -- all on a giant graffiti mural outside the shop.
SB
There are other murals in San Marcos.
SB(stand-up)
A local food truck has graffiti that serves as a memorial to a lost loved one AND as a business logo.
SB
While the word graffiti still connotes mischief, artists and businesses in San Marcos are working together to solve the problem, using a color explosion of their own. For Bobcat Update, I'm Jason Harris.

Jonathan Szedeli
Campus carry has been in effect for almost seven months. The law allows those who have permits to carry concealed guns to carry them on campus. Bobcat Update's Jonathan Szedeli takes a look at how the law has affected Texas State.
Senate Bill Eleven is the legislation that allows campus carry. Many expressed strong opinions for and against the law when it was enacted, and now -- several months later -- those opinions remain strong. Some professors question its relevance.
SB
According to University Police, there have been no incidents involving campus carry since the law went into effect. Despite this fact, not everyone's fears have been calmed.
SB
While some share this view, others on campus have a different perspective and embrace the new law.
SB
School officials would like to remind students that while C-H-L licenses allow you to carry on campus, certain buildings -- such as the Student Health Center, Child Development Center and the President's house -- are restricted areas
SB (Stand Up)
One concern that both sides of this controversial issue share is the desire to maintain a safe campus for everyone.

Areli Cabildo
Texas State University and The Hays County Food Bank are collaborating to bring free food to students on campus. Bobcat Update's Areli Cabildo tells us where the food is distributed.
Expenses for a college student can quickly add up. Tuition, books, supplies and more have to be paid. Often that leaves very little money to eat nutritious meals. But donations from H-E-B, local farms and the community are giving students a chance to enjoy healthier choices at mealtime.
SB
The meal bags contain fresh produce, meats and bread, and students who get them are happy the university has found a way to help them manage their tight budgets.
SB
Food is distributed each Monday on campus from noon until one at the United Campus Ministries building. For more information on distribution locations, visit w-w-w-dot-hays-county-food-bank-dot-com. For Bobcat Update, I'm Areli Cabildo.

New technology at Alkek Library is taking printing to a new dimension. Bobcat Update's Matthew Fagerson has the story.
From toys and trinkets to prosthetic limbs, Texas State students can now three-D print almost anything they can imagine.
SB
Some students are already solving problems with the tools available in Alkek's three-D print lab.
SB
The lab also has scanning technology that can quickly create computer models of real-world objects.
One goal of those who oversee the lab is to introduce three-D scanning and printing to students who want to learn more.
SB
The three-D print lab is located on the fourth floor of Alkek. Anyone with a valid Texas State I-D can use the printers. Cost is based on the amount of material used. You can find more information about three-D printing at the library's website. For Bobcat Update, I'm Matthew Fagerson.

Kathryn Macchia
The Aquarena Springs Loop 82 overpass project is moving into its final phase. Bobcat Update's Kathryn Macchia has more on the story.
Traffic was reduced to one lane recently as workers prepare to permanently re-route traffic through the railroad crossing and the intersection at Post Road. The lane reduction will last several months, leading to potential problems for business owners in the area.
SB
The Texas Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to allow extra time to travel through this area, but some drivers are choosing to avoid the construction traffic altogether.
SB
Road signs are in place to alert drivers of the lane closure. Traffic will remain in this new configuration for the foreseeable future. Two-lane traffic each way will resume after the frontage roads and overpass are finished.
SB
The Loop 82 overpass project is expected to continue until late 2017. For Bobcat Update, I'm Kathryn Macchia.

Jacey Yarbrough
Construction of the Loop 82 Overpass along Aquarena Springs is advancing. As it enters a new phase, the project is causing more traffic delays . Bobcat Update's Jacey Yarbrough has the story.
Drivers are being redirected through a new railroad crossing at Post Road and a new street called Bobcat Drive. The detour will remain active for several months while the over-pass is being completed. Some students say the detour will affect their morning commute.
SB
Motorists should allow extra time to travel through the detoured areas, including Travis Elementary School and the Bobcat Stadium parking lot. Tex-DOT has asked for patience when driving through the work zone, but not all commuters are concerned.
SB

Manal Hage
Texas State's Department of Theater and Dance now features the newly revived musical production, The World According to Snoopy. Bobcat Update's Manal Hage (phonetic) takes a peak behind the curtain.
Based on the classic comic strip, Peanuts by Charles M. Schultz, the production includes many of his favorite characters -- Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Sally, Lucy, Linus and Peppermint Patty. They all will sing and dance their way through life with Snoopy at the wheel.
Directed by Kaitlin Hopkins, head of the musical theater program at Texas State, the production features new orchestrations, vocal arrangements and choreography.
Texas State collaborated with Larry Grossman, the original Broadway composer of 1968's You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, to produce Snoopy.
SOT
The production team has been hard at work since fall 2016 putting the show together. From building the set from scratch, to sewing new costumes and countless hours of rehearsal; the team dedicated its time to make this show as sophisticated and as fun as possible for audiences.
SOT
The Department of Theater and Dance is working with Houston's nonprofit company, Theater Under the Stars, to make the production possible.
SOT
Hopkins' message to students is simple -- The characters are tenacious. When they fall down, they get right back up. That, says Hopkins, is an important lesson for us all.
The production will play at Patti Strickel Harrison Theater from now through February 19th. Tickets are available at T-X-State-Presents-dot-com. For Bobcat Update, I'm Manal Hage.

Jason Harris
The lack of on-campus parking is an issue that never goes away for Texas State students. Bobcat Update's Jason Harris has more.
Over the past few years, Texas State has had several major construction projects to serve its ever-growing enrollment. However, one problem remains constant and seems to be getting worse.
SB
Construction of the Loop 82 overpass along Aquarena Springs Drive has compounded the problem. Many parking spaces are no longer available because of the construction. Some students question whether the project is worth the hassle.
SB
An additional 20 parking spaces in the East lot of Bobcat Stadium have now been designated for red permits, which -- when combined with the areas lost to construction -- means about 300 spaces are no longer available to commuters. This is happening at a time when there's record enrollment at the university.
SB
Texas State's Parking Services clearly states on its website that the purchase of a parking permit does not guarantee students a parking space. Some students say they've resorted to using two-hour parking in front of businesses near campus as an alternative. Others say they simply show up early -- sometimes an hour before their class -- to wait for a parking spot. For Bobcat Update, I'm Jason Harris.

Jonathan Szedeli
Governor Abbott's recent order to freeze hiring at state agencies carries some possible challenges for Texas State University. Jonathan Szedeli has more in this Bobcat Update.
In his State of the State address, Governor Abbott ordered a hiring freeze that could save the state an estimated 200 million dollars. The freeze applies to most Texas agencies and higher education institutions including Texas State.
SB
Many students wonder how the freeze will affect them. University officials say the impact will be limited.
SB
About 30 percent of the university's funding comes from the state. The university's president, Denise Trauth, is no stranger to dealing with hiring freezes. She implemented similar restrictions in 2003 under former Governor Rick Perry.
SB
The freeze does not affect jobs that have a direct impact on public safety, such as campus police. For Bobcat Update, I'm Jonathan Szedeli.

Joshua Kelley
A favorite swimming spot for some locals is still closed after heavy rain last September caused damage. Bobcat Update's Josh Kelley tells us about the area some people call the Headwaters.
For some, it's a safe haven -- a place to relax. The Headwaters is located where the San Marcos River begins -- where water flows from Spring Lake near the Saltgrass Restaurant.
SB
The banks of the river have in the past been an ideal place to sun bathe and relax. Part of the embankment became unstable after the floods of 2015 and the heavy rains last year. The area continues to be blocked off by a chain-linked fence.
SB
The closure is part of a River Beautification Project.
SB
Though this part of the river is off limits now, other areas are as popular as ever. For more information about the beautification project, visit the City of San Marcos website. For Bobcat Update, I'm Josh Kelley.

Texas State is reacting to racist messages being posted on campus. The Vice President of Student Affairs released a statement last week reminding everyone of the policy for posting fliers and other literature. Bobcat Update's Victor Blanco has more on the story.
Although the University has policies regulating the posting and distribution of literature, the rules are often ignored. Fliers and bulletins are posted without regard to the guidelines.
SB (Stand up)
The University had several controversial fliers make headlines in recent months. The most recent, titled Take Your Country Back, was posted last week and quickly taken down. Many students say they are willing to follow Texas State's policy if the material is offensive.
SB
Senior Lecturer of Media Law Gilbert Martinez says students don't have a right to post wherever they choose but their ideas should be heard.
SB
Individuals violating this policy are subject to Student Justice or Organization Conduct Procedures. To learn more, students can contact the Vice President for Student Affairs Office. For Bobcat Update, I'm Victor Blanco.

Lara Dietrich
Some residence halls at Texas State are finally receiving access to wireless internet. Bobcat Update's Lara Dietrich has more on the story.
Wireless internet is almost a necessity for college students. Ethernet cables are fast becoming outdated as newer laptops come without connectors. To browse the internet, students often depend on mobile devices. Many say they need wi-fi in their rooms:
SB Russell
Newer halls on campus were built with wireless installed, but there are three older ones that lack the necessary equipment. The Department of Housing and Residential Life is planning to bring wi-fi to every dorm.
SB Proite
However, the project is proving to be costly.

Texas State University has several construction projects underway. Bobcat Update's Sterling Pitchford tells us about ongoing efforts to enhance parts of the campus.
Last year, the university completed a walkway between Commons and Flowers. While it was under construction, the project interfered with student living.
SB Leslie
The university has also completed renovations on Jones dining hall. While the aesthetics of the dining hall improved dramatically, some students question whether the money could have been put to better use elsewhere, such as classrooms or transportation.
SB Delanie

Texas State students are back on campus after a much needed winter break. Bobcat Update's Lauren Crider caught up with a few Bobcats to see just how excited they are to be back in town.
Bobcats have returned, which means San Marcos is back to its typical, bustling self. Every December the city clears out for a glorious few weeks, but January always rolls around and campus becomes a swarm of happy students again.
SB
There are always construction projects underway at the university. Construction on and around campus can at times be a hindrance for Bobcats. but there's nothing to do but grin and bear it.
SB
Regardless of the construction or traffic, most students are happy to be back. The new semester offers new opportunities to learn and grow, and, for many lucky bobcats, this semester is their last.

In a town that is no stranger to construction, San Marcos can now add Sessom Drive to its construction projects. Brooke Cowey has the story.
Stand Up
Sessom Drive is currently a sea of orange due to construction. The construction zone is affecting traffic and causing certain bus routes to be changed.
SB
The extra time it takes to get to and from campus is causing frustration among students.
SB
The changed bus routes were not just a surprise to students. Bus drivers found out about the route changes on THE day that they were switched.
SB
For Bobcat Update, I'm Brooke Cowey.

Andrea Tullos
The end of the semester is near, which means finals are approaching. Andrea Tullos tells us more in this Bobcat Update.
Finals... a most dreaded word that many college students hate to hear. In a month, students will be pulling all-nighters, drinking endless amounts of coffee and surviving with little sleep. Alkek Library has a few tips and tricks to help students during this stressful time. Senior Alyson Crooms works at SLAC on the fourth floor. She says SLAC is closed during finals week, but its services are available until then.
SB - Alyson Crooms
If you don't need a tutoring session and just want to study, you'll find accommodations at the library during finals week. Alkek will be open around the clock weekdays, and on the weekend, it will stay open until three a.m. The library offers some unique stress relievers.
SB - Tra Boggas
Finals this year will be held from December 9th to December 16th. Preparation is helpful in getting ready for the big week.

Gabriel James
The sorority Alpha Delta Pi hosts a night of music and fun. Bobcat Update's Gabriel James has more on what is being called Wes Fest.
Texas State's Alpha Delta Pi Sorority will have its first ever Wes Fest at Sewell Park on Friday. The event, which will be open to the public, will provide food, games and entertainment and a performance by recording artist Wes Walker.
SB?
Alpha Delta Pi's President Jordyn Kukla says Wes Fest was created to help The Ronald McDonald House Charities and the A-D-Pi Foundation.
SB?
SU: 2016 is the first year of this West Fest but hopefully won't be the last. The infectious positive energy is hard to deny and so is free food. For Bobcat Update, I'm Gabriel James.

Hailey Kellum
It's a Texas State tradition for students to jump in the river after receiving their diplomas. Bobcat Update's Hailey Kellum finds out how December graduates feel about this tradition.
Graduating seniors are often asked about their future plans, but they also have another important question to answer: Will they participate in the tradition of jumping in the river? The ritual has been a part of Texas State for years but December graduates face a chillier challenge. For that reason some Bobcats weren't sure if they would take the dive.
SB
Mass Communication Senior Aaryn Cantu says she learned about the tradition after she saw pictures of people jumping in the river wearing their caps and gowns.
SB
The weather causes the most concern but students decided they wouldn't let a few moments of cold water hold them back.
SB
Standup: Whether it's rain or shine, it seems like most Bobcats will be turning their tassels and taking a plunge. For Bobcat Update, I'm Hailey Kellum.

Travis Tyler
Texas State's student government encourages students to come out and participate in a healthy debate. Travis Tyler has the story in this Bobcat Update
With all the commotion going on with the elections, the Student Government at Texas State decided to take all that energy and put it into something students could be a part of.
SB:
Student Government along with college Democrats and college Republicans held a political debate in the L-B-J student teaching center to discuss policies and share their stances prominent issues that are hot in today's news
SB:
During the debate the students were allowed to ask questions to College Republican representative Connor Clegg and college Democratic representative Ben Salinas about their positions on certain topics.
SB:
Many attendees said they felt the debate went well.
SB:
Some felt a bit differently.
SB:
This is the second event held by student government in a series called Bobcats United whose goal is to bring forth discussion and encourage students to address issues that are important to them as well as bring unity to the San Marcos community.
SB:
Stand-Up: Student Government plans on holding another event next week on the 18th. So if you're interested go to studentgovernment.dos.txstate.edu to get details on current and past events, or stop by their office on the fourth floor in L-B-J. For Bobcat Update I'm Travis Tyler.

Leanne Kelley
The Student Government of Texas State has passed legislation to name the newly constructed area that runs parallel to the Quad. Leanne Kelley has this Bobcat Update.
The S-G-A wants to name the area that runs from the Undergraduate Academic Center to the Den. Commons. S-G-A voted on the legislation late last month. Student senator Elijah Miller is excited about the legislation he helped pass.
SB: Elijah Miller
Students and faculty think giving the area a name will give it a point of reference and make it easier for students to put it to use.
SB: Professor Weston Nowlin
SB: Elijah Miller
Commons is familiar name on campus. The area that's being named is next to the Commons Dining Hall, which has served Texas State students for many years.. For Bobcat Update, I'm Leanne Kelley.

Kelci Benesch
Several Texas State students celebrated Diwali this past weekend. Here's Kelci Benesch with more on the story.
Traditionally, the festival of lights, called Diwali, represents the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. It is a religious, cultural, and social occasion celebrated by many. For the Indian Student Association, Diwali is also an opportunity to promote unity and diversity all at once.
[SB]
At the event, students performed a mixture of traditional and modern song and dance -- all influenced by their unique heritage. The event creates a connection to a culture that some Texas State students have never experienced before. Senior Candace Beck has attended the event twice.
[SB]
The evening was rounded out with a traditional Indian supper and a feeling of harmony. The twinkling lights and the chime of bells are much more than an attention grabber. They tell a story of heritage and history. For Bobcat Update, I'm Kelci Benesch.

Salsa Night happens the first Friday of the month at the Stonewall Warehouse. The Latin Music Studies program at Texas State hosts the event where two salsa bands, Salsa del Rio and Orquesta del Rio, perform. Salsa Night gives attendees the chance to dance and listen to a kind of music that they wouldn't normally hear at bars on the square.
(SB)
Several music majors from Texas State attend the event.
(SB)
The last salsa night of the semester will be held on December 9th from 9 until midnight. There's no cover charge for those 21 and over. Those who are 18 to 20 years old are charged five dollars. For Bobcat Update, I'm Christi Kerr.

Nick Hayes
The Square in San Marcos is known for its popular bar scene, but one club in particular sticks out from the crowd - leaving its Marc for people to remember. Nick Hayes has more in this Bobcat Update.
The Marc is a night club that stays busy during the late night hours. Different themes are associated with different nights, bringing variety to the atmosphere.
SB
With plenty of space and an abundance of alcohol, the Marc provides a place for patrons to enjoy themselves while blowing off steam.
SB
Flexible hours are offered to employees who are enrolled in school.
SB
Mostly on the weekends, the Marc hosts musical artists from a wide variety of genres. Tickets often sell fast and the concerts bring in large crowds. For example, an upcoming show with electronic music producer Marshmello is already sold out for November 17th.
SB
Still, safety should never be a concern with up to ten or 12 security guards available during large turnouts to keep the crowd under control.
SB
The Marc is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 2 am. It is located on the square downtown across from the old courthouse. For Bobcat Update, I'm Nick Hayes.

Shelby Powell
The Texas State University STEM program will receive a five-point-eight-million-dollar grant the federal government. Bobcat Update's Shelby Powell has more on the story.
Texas State is one of 21 universities this year to receive U-S Department of Education funding. The five-point-eight million dollars will promote STEM, which is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The grant will be distributed incrementally over a five-year period to help students succeed in the STEM-related disciplines.
SB
The grant will specifically target Hispanics and low-income students who are seeking degrees. Some students have ideas on how the STEM program could be improved

Sydney Herrera
A referendum has been approved that will lead to the expansion of the L-B-J Student Center. Sydney Herrera has more, in this Bobcat Update,
The L-B-J Student Center is home to many different offices and food venues for students. With Texas State constantly growing, the center is reaching its limit. More space is needed to serve students.
SB
To help solve the issue, the L-B-J Student Center staff proposed a building expansion. Students voted on a referendum last semester that would increase the student service fee by 18 dollars over the next two fall semesters to help fund the expansion. Sixty-eight percent of those who voted were in favor of the expansion. The L-B-J staff has already begun making small upgrades for students to enjoy.
SB
The renovated L-B-J Student Center is expected to have a ballroom that is twice the size of the current one. Also, there will be more meeting rooms on the fifth floor and a new information desk. Some students are very excited about the possibilities.
SB
SU: The L-B-J Student Center is still waiting on final approval from the Board of Regents to start the expansion. Once approved, the L-B-J Student Center is said to be completed over the next three years. For Bobcat Update, I'm Sydney Herrera.

Miracle Robinson
During November beards are not only a style or for warmth...in some cases they are grown to create awareness about cancer. Bobcat Update's Miracle Robinson has more.
SU
Texas State University's Police Department is for the second consecutive year promoting No Shave November. The police department is united in a cause that affects more than 22-thousand people daily.
SB
For U-P-D, the buy-in price is 25-dollars per person -- even though not every officer is expected to make it through the entire month without shaving.
SB
Officers aren't the only ones joining the No Shave November campaign. Students are, too.
SB
Texas State student Kyle Spencer says that he decided not to shave because of his great uncle who is battling cancer.
SB
Whether it's to raise donations or to raise awareness, No Shave November is going strong.

Tobin Lavalley
Increasing tuition costs are an issue on every college student's mind but one Texas State Student is taking a stand to unite others to share their frustrations. Tobin Lavalley has more in this Bobcat Update.
Hannah Durrance has dedicated her free time, between working two jobs and raising three children, to share her story with students on the quad. Hannah is a soon-to-be-homeless single mother who has maxed out her student loans and is just one class short of graduation.
SB
On Friday Hannah and her children held signs in the quad telling their stories and encouraged students to make their own signs.
SB
Hannah says that she has spoken with the University and there are no more financial aid options available to her to finish her final class but she still gets letters from Texas State in the mail like this one.
SB
The Durrance family has been busy packing the things in their home to put into storage and even though they'll be living out of their car until they find a more permanent solution, they say sticking together is the most important thing. For Bobcat Update I'm Tobin Lavalley.

Samuel Herbert
Texas State hosted a modern day civil rights leader this week. Samuel Herbert has more.
Lupe Gonzalo, a community organizer for the Coalition of Immokalee (Im-ock-ah-lee) Workers, came to Texas State to speak to students about worker living conditions. The C-I-W is based in Immokalee, Florida. The C-I-W educates tomato, pepper, and strawberry pickers about their legal rights. Gonzalo encourages students to get involved in the effort.
SB
The fast food chain Wendy's has not signed the Fair Food Agreement. The Agreement is a legally binding contract to purchase only produce that comes from certified farms in good standing with the C-I-W. These farms must provide shade, water and living wages for their workers. McDonalds and Subway HAVE signed the agreement.
Gonzalo says students can get involved by joining a community letter delegation
SB
According to the Gonzalo, these efforts should bring Wendy's corporate leaders to the bargaining table for farm workers rights. Gonzalo will soon finish her tour of Texas at a similar outreach event in San Antonio. For Bobcat Update, I'm Samuel Herbert.

Isaac Garza
There's a mastermind behind the official Texas State Twitter account. We find out more in this report from Isaac Garza.
Spending hours per day on Twitter is trending.
SB
Texas State has around 67-thousand followers. Students tweet using the official Texas State Twitter account to stay updated on events, express complaints, and show school spirit. But do they ever think about the person behind the account?
SB
Social Media Coordinator Jon-Stephen Stansel is the wizard behind the Texas State Twitter account. He and a student worker tweet all day from a windowless office at the J-C Kellam building.
SB
SB
Stansel is constantly monitoring Twitter for tweets that have any reiteration of "Texas State" and mean tweets don't seem to phase him.
SB
Whether the tweets about Texas State are negative or positive, it is Stansel's job to keep the voice of Texas State consistently charismatic with a flare of style at times.
SB
No, he can't stop the rain, but he can let people know that classes are cancelled. In fact, during the last flooding crisis in September, Twitter was the method of communication that informed many people that classes were officially cancelled.
SB
Stansel admits he likes to get geeky with some tweets, and that the times he gets to make a prospective Bobcat's day by congratulating them on their admission far outweighs the plethora of negativity coming at him daily.
SB
SU: So next time you tweet @TXST, maybe think about the person at the receiving end. An eagle eye. Always watching. Always listening. Always caring for us Bobcats. For Bobcat Update, I'm Isaac Garza.
